As a result of a call from the Glenorchy Football Club on 22 December 2010 for funding assistance with the installation of lights for the KGV Oval I worked on a proposal, culminating in the Tasmanian Liberals’ announcement today.

In summary, a Hodgman Liberal Government will provide up to $650,000 (the estimated total cost) for the installation of lights at the KGV oval in Glenorchy.

Background

  • King George V oval is one of Tasmania’s major sporting venues.
It is the home ground to the Glenorchy Football Club and the Glenorchy Cricket Club.
  • When I was a Liberal candidate in Denison in 2006, I initiated a similar policy.
  • Four years on and the State Government has not funded lights for the KGV.
  • The SFL preliminary, grand final and representative games will be played at KGV in the 2010 season, and it is where the Southern Football League will have its administrative base.
  • The ground is around the same size as the MCG and there is a total spectator capacity of around 20,000.
  • The Glenorchy Football Club (and indeed the Glenorchy City Council) has been lobbying for government assistance towards the installation of lights at KGV Oval for many years, and has worked extremely hard to upgrade facilities at the Oval, including rebuilding the Cresswell-Breakley Stand after fire damage.
  • Lights will enhance the facilities at the Oval, for both senior and junior sports and other uses, like concerts.

‘Youth Precinct’ for Glenorchy

A Hodgman Liberal Government will commit $2.3 million over three years in support of Tasmanians in the City of Glenorchy, with two more exciting initiatives:

  • providing $1.5 million over three years to restore the award-winning Chance on Main youth intervention program, located in Glenorchy; and
  • providing $200,000 towards the establishment of a Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) for Glenorchy.

All three policies are a step towards the Liberals’ goal of creating a ‘youth precinct’ for Glenorchy in recognition that the City has one of the highest populations of young people and lowest socio-economic status.  The youth precinct model has been successful overseas and interstate.

The Tasmanian Liberals’ package for Glenorchy is a start only – there are more exciting initiatives planned for this area under a Hodgman Liberal Government, and these will be announced later in the election campaign.
