Action
The Tasmanian Liberals will put in place one planning scheme for all developments in Tasmania – residential, commercial and industrial.

What this policy means for you
From the most minor residential development to the most major commercial development, under this policy Tasmanians won’t battle the red tape and bureaucracy that Tasmania currently has with its 36 individual planning schemes.

The Tasmanian Liberals believe that government should do everything it can to facilitate development, and that includes streamlining the process for development applications which at present is needlessly complicated.

For 13 years, the Government has promised but not delivered on planning reform. As a result we have 36 planning schemes which are overly complicated and have hampered investment in our state.

The Liberals’ will establish one planning statewide planning scheme for all developments which will be fairer, cheaper, simpler and faster.

Fairer:
Limitation of third party appeals: not allowed when a development is assessed against objective rules and tests.

When not assessed against objective rules and tests, should be limited to those directly impacted upon.

A review of a decision should only be against the same policies and objective rules and tests as the first assessment.

Cheaper:
We will ensure that costs aren’t significant – in most cases should only be a cost-recovery exercise.

Streamlined planning system, as we are proposing, will attract less fees and charges.

Simpler:
We will establish one planning scheme, replacing the current 36 schemes.

Faster:
In addition to the 24 hour turn around on basic permits for housing construction, we will seek to enforce strict timelines for approval.

Urgent action is needed to fix this problem and to re-boot the economy.

The Tasmanian Liberals’ proposal is another part of our positive agenda for Tasmania. We are providing the leadership that this state requires to move into the future at a time when the Labor-Green Government is not showing any leadership
