Thanks to the joint efforts of the State Government, CSIRO and a number of key conservation organisations, one of the world’s rarest marine creatures, the Spotted Handfish, has been given a lifeline.

The unique fish prefers to walk on its ‘hands’ rather than swim and has been listed as critically endangered since 1996.

It is one of the few species that has survived totally unchanged since dinosaurs roamed the Earth and has unique identifying spot patterns that allow growth and movement of individuals to be tracked.

I congratulate Seahorse World at Beauty Point for its hard work to create the world’s first display of a captive breeding program of this species.
