As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Tasmanian Liberal Members Jacquie Petrusma MP, Dr Vanessa Goodwin MLC and I held an afternoon tea at Parliament House in the hope of raising awareness about the effects of ovarian cancer on the community.

It was extremely encouraging so see so many women and men from different organisations in our community join together for afternoon tea and giving so generously to such a worthwhile and beneficial cause.

The Tasmanian Liberals are strong supporters of Ovarian Cancer Australia, and in raising vital funds for research into the cause of the disease.

Each year in February, Ovarian Cancer Australia runs a national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month campaign to highlight the symptoms of ovarian cancer and to raise funds for their programs.

Ovarian Cancer Australia’s awareness initiatives and resources are designed to raise awareness of ovarian cancer in the community and educate women about risks and symptoms so that they seek early medical advice, giving them a greater chance of survival.

Three Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every day, and one in 77 Australian women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. This is an issue that continues to affect Tasmanians and the quality of life of women across the state.

I have no doubt that almost every Tasmanian would have a devastating story about how themselves, or someone they know who has been affected by ovarian cancer.
